Location
manly is located in the northern beaches area,17 kilometres north-east of the Sydney CBD (central busines s district). It is a well known suburb of Northen Sydney.





History
Manly was discovered in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip of the royal navy and a group of local aboriginies named the place Manly Cove. From the early 1820s people bagan to start living in the Manly Cove and Northern Harbour areas. Manly was isolated from Sydney for many years and was only accessable by road through paramatta, the north-western bushlands or by punt from the spit in the middle harbour. The first person to see the potential of Manly as a resort villiage was Henry Gilbert Smith, an english entreprenaur. In the 1850s he built the first hotel, and developed a shopping street from the harbour to the ocean, naming it the corso after the famous street in Rome. Henry was behind the first ferry service to manly and began the beautification of the ocean beach with the with the towering Norfolk Pines. manly history.jpg
